Bialik, Hayyim Nahman
(1873-1934)
   Russian Hebew poet, essayist, storywriter and translator. He was born in Zhitomir and lived in Volozhin, Odessa, Korostyshev, Sosnowiec and Warsaw. In 1924 he settled in Palestine. His poetry is infused with Jewish hopes, memories and national aspirations; written in a simple lyric style, it uses Hebrew metrics and biblical parallelism. His essays trace the course of Jewish culture, the state of Hebrew literature, and the development of language and style. Together with Yehoshua Hana Ravnitzky he published Sepher ha-Aggadah, which classified midrashic material according to subject matter.
